That Forever Kind of Thing

I spent the weekend with my true love. He’s not what I expected: barely 3 feet tall with a penchant for hysterical sobbing, but I adore him.

He arrived at 7:00 pm on Friday. By 7:15 pm, it was obvious that his secret identity would continue to come between us when he announced that I didn’t know any of his friends in the Justice League. When I then asked how things were at his secret laboratory, he wailed, “You can’t talk about that in public! That’s why it’s called a ‘secret’ laboratory.”

At least he’s very friendly. At the yogurt parlor, he introduced himself to everyone. Then he entertained them with a litany of rhymes involving the words funny bone.

He rarely listens to me. As I retold the story of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he continued to insist that “the snake was really nice but he felt like no one liked him. I would have liked him so he would be nice.” Sure, he missed the point, but what’s not to admire about a guy who thinks the whole world is redeemable.

Humble, he’s not. That night, as I snuggled him close, I whispered, “Baby, I love you.” He replied, “Yeah. That’s because I’m so adorable.” He’s right. I do love him for being so adorable.

The next morning, we had a full day planned. Unfortunately, we found the perfect weapon against his arch-nemesis at the local gas station. He insisted we cancel the day in order to test the weapon. We headed to the not-so-secret base, where we held a mighty water gun fight against the Mommy-beast. The faithful sidekick, Wondergirl, shrieked with glee as she took her soakings and then ran about the grassy knoll babbling in 2-year-old gibberish. My love is not known for his bravery. He hid behind trees, running out occasionally to state, “Okay, soak me now.”

I stayed a while longer to watch my 4-year-old nephew spiral into his imagination. Since the day of his announced arrival, he has been my reason for living. Sure, I love my nieces, but this smart, silly, loving little boy occupies a place in my heart uniquely his. I love every minute of watching him grow.

On a much less important note: I found my dress for the wedding - an afternoon, outdoor event. My solo arrival will be a true puzzler. I will look fabulous in this dress and sweater (click to see a picture - sweater in spa blue). I think I’ll wear my pearls – they’re small, Hawaiian tear-drop earrings with a matching necklace – yes or no, fashion divas? The best part of the outfit is that I got it on sale for $70 total. I can’t believe it! Ann Taylor for $70. My sister bought a similar outfit. We may not be as lovely as Beauty Queen and her entourage, but we won’t break any cameras.

I can't believe you talked about the secret laboratory in public! I hope nobody else heard.

Thanks, ladies.

And yes, omar, it was the ultimate in superhero tabu. How was I to know it wasn't common knowledge? These things are so hard to keep up with - there really should be a Miss Manners for falling crazily in love with would-be superheroes.

sigh. why can't they stay that way?

cute dress. perfect for a wedding.

you'd better activate the force field, glo.

I'll have to contact the secret lab to find out how - not that I know where any secret labs are, of course. How silly of me to imply such a thing!

p.s. Are you sure they don't? Sometimes I find male-female interaction simpler if I continue to think of the man as a 4-year-old wannabe superhero.

Hm. That sounded insulting towards men.

$70 dress and sweater? Only $70? I'm glad I'm a boy.

In no way. I'm religious, remember. Being "childlike" is one of the pinnacles of religious achievement. It was a compliment, really.

Be very glad you're a boy. If for no other reason than inexpensive clothes (shoes excluded - those sneakers cost more than the GNP of several African nations - I learned that from Live8) and styles that rarely change. My dress will likely be out of style by the August 12th wedding.

glo, that's a classic style. i think you'll probably be safe until at least september 21st.

yeah, treating them like a four-year-old is all good until you find yourself cutting the crusts off their sandwiches and fending off temper tantrums. and it's not as fun when they are just superhero wannabes, but can't even manage to pick up their socks.

Maybe until Labor Day, then I will be terribly gauche.

Hmm. Another good point.

As my nephew left the house yesterday in sweat pants and a too-small muscle tee, let's not forget the terrible lifelong fashion sense...my sister has this theory that all mis-behavior is really just normal child behavior that never got squashed by a loving mother. Always nice to know who to blame, isn't it??

Boys are just so much fun...as I found out at M's baptism on Saturday (story to be posted soon) and your nephew sounds adorable. You are very lucky that he shares these secrets with you...one day that will come in handy when he's a teenager and Mom and Dad are at the wits end...aunts come in very handy during those times. (heck, they're handy now and my nephew is only 6...my sis and I trade our kids for this very reason.)
My mom use to let my son run around downtown SLC with a towel tied around his neck...girls could never get away with that!

I get to go see my nephew this weekend. I am also a deleriously proud aunt and completely taken by baby Jay. I guess he's not technically a BABY anymore, b/c he's two . . . but he will always be my baby.

Always your baby. Always. Enjoy every minute of aunthood - there's nothing better.

Oh I know, I love it so much. Not only do I get to completely jeopardize his time when I go to visit, but I also get to hand him back over to my sister when he gets fussy and annoying. But I LOVE him even when he calls me "uncle!"
